This tiny town on the Mekong is an unexpected delight, with a relaxing, indolent atmosphere. Further north stop at the best riverside vantage point from which to view the rare freshwater Irrawady dolphins which can be best seen late afternoon.

Irrawaddy Dolphins about fifteen to twenty of these rare freshwater dolphins make their home on a beautiful stretch of the Mekong River near a small set of rapids. They make upward arches, breaking the surface of the water as they swim about the area. They are not jumpers like their sea-faring relatives and are quite a bit shyer as well. They have good reason to be shy towards humans as they have been hunted and killed by fishermen in the past. The hope is that their numbers will slowly increase, as more fishermen in the area are educated about them. They are most active in the early morning hours (around 6 am) and the late afternoon and early evening hours.

Then, drive back to Kratie and take ferry to Koh Trong Island. Overnight in Kratie

Day 2: Kratie – Kampong Cham – Phnom Penh

Breakfast will be at hotel.

In the morning, we will ride around Koh Trong Island, directly opposite Kratie town, has a lovely 8-km stretch of sandy dunes (in the dry season) where you can swim and relax. Aside from the beach, the island consists of small market farms and a simple, laid-back rural life – highly recommended for those who want to chill out. On the south side is a small Vietnamese floating village. To reach this island from Kratie involves a trip on a small ferry boat (~5m long) across the waters of the Mekong River. Your will embark from the town’s small jetty, which is next to the town’s small bus station, on a ~1.5km, somewhat circuitous route (avoiding floating debris and cross currents). After 20 minutes or so you will reach Koh Trong island. The island is inhabited, largely by rice farmers, with a small village facing Kratie town. We hire bikes/Ox card to ride around the Island. The ride winds through rice paddies and small traditional Khmer villages. Parts of your cycling route are lined with sugar palm trees. Will stop along the way to visit a local family.
