ITINERARY

Tours 10 days Siemreap – Song Saa – Phnom Penh (luxury trip):

Day 1: Take flight to Siemreap & arrive Siemreap airport. On arrival, pick up & transfer to hotel. After check in, free relax & recover after long flights. Overnight Shinta Mani Resort

Day 2: (B,D): Siemreap: 8:00am pick up at your hotel & transfer to explore Siemreap: See the unique interior brick sculptures Prasat Kravan, the Srah Srang reservoir (known as “The Royal Baths” was once used for ritual bathing), Banteay Kdei (surrounded by 4 concentric walls), Eastern Mebon (guarded at its corner by stone figures of harnessed elephants, some of which are still in a reasonable state of preservation). Continue to visit the Ta Prohm.  One of the area’s most beautiful temples, Ta Prohm has been relatively untouched since it was discovered and retains much of its mystery. Its appeal lies in the fact that, unlike the other monuments of Angkor, it was abandoned and swallowed by the jungle, looking very much the ways most of the Angkor temples appeared when European explorers first stumbled upon them.

This afternoon, visit as well TakeoChau Say Tevoda and Thommanon. In the afternoon, visit Preah Khan temple. Built by the King Jayavarman VII, Preah Khan is, like Ta Prohm, a place of towered enclosures and shoulders-hanging corridors. Unlike Ta Prohm, however, Preah Khan is in a reasonable state of preservation and ongoing restoration efforts should maintain and even improve this situation. Then walk up to the mountain-temple of Pre Rup until sunset. This evening, enjoy dinner with Apsara dance show. Then transfer back to your hotel. O/n at the same hotel.

Day 3: (B): Siemreap: 7:30am pick up at hotel and transfer to visit Wat Thmey (Killing fields in Siemreap) which is located about 3 km from the centre of Siem Reap along the exit road from Angkor. Then continue to visit the South Gate (with its huge statues depicting the churning of the ocean of milk), the ancient capital of Angkor Thom (12th century) and visit Bayon Temple (unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara), the Royal EnclosurePhimeanakas, the Elephants Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King.

Afternoon, visit the most famous of all the temples on the plain of Angkor: Angkor Wat. The temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Its distinctive five towers are emblazoned on the Cambodian flag and the 12th century masterpiece is considered by art historians to be the prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture. Angkor Wat’s five towers symbolize Meru’s five peaks – the enclosed wall represents the mountains at the edge of the world and the surrounding moat, the ocean beyond. Sunset Angkor Wat. O/n at the same hotel.

Day 4: (B,L): Siem Reap: Transfer to the archaeological site for the sunrise from the Phnom Bakheng, one of two hills dominating the plain of Angkor, from where you will have a spectacular view of the Western Baray and Angkor Wat.

Return to the hotel for breakfast.

After breakfast, this morning at 7:00, you will have an exciting day excursion to Kbal Spean the River of a Thousand Linga, dating from the early 11th century, the relief carving that line the stream beds are said to purify the water before it fills the reservoirs of Angkor.

Picnic lunch at Kbal Spean or on van on the way to visit the Banteay Srei, the beautiful ‘Women’s Citadel’. Located 37 kms. From Siem Reap town, this was Cambodia’s last major Khmer temple to be re-discovered. This temple has the best engravings among all the ruins and was used in the film ‘Lara Croft Tomb Raider’. Then transfer back to hotel in the late afternoon. O/n at the same hotel.

8:00am pick up at your hotal in Phnom Penh and transfer to visit Kiling Field of Cheung Ek is situated 15 kilometers south-west of Phnom Penh and made famous by the film of the same name “Killing Field”. it was a place where more than 17,000 civilians were killed and buried in mass graves; many of them transported here after detention and torture in Toul Sleng. This place is a chilling reminder of the brutalities of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. In the center of the area is a 17 story glass stupa which houses 8000 skulls exhumed from mass graves. Back to Phnom Penh visit the Independence Monument which built in 1958 as a memorial to Cambodia’s war dead after the gaining of independence from France in 1953, the monument, built in the Angkorian style, consists of five levels decorated with 100 snake heads. It is at its most impressive later in the afternoon with shadows highlighting the complexity of the design and giving the structure a warm orange glow.

This afternopon, transfer to visit the Notorious Tuol Sleng Museum. In 1975 Tuol Svay Prey High School was taken over by Pol Pot’s security forces and turned into a prison known as Security Prison 21 (S-21). It soon became the largest such center of detention and torture in the country. More than 17.000 people held at S-21 were taken to the extermination camp at Choeung Ek to be executed; detainees who died during torture were buried in mass graves in the prison ground. The museum displays include room after room of these photographs of men, women and children covering the walls from floor to ceiling; virtually all the people pictured were later killed. Continue to the nearby National Museum. Built in 1917 it is an exceptional example of traditional architecture and is exclusively devoted to preserving and displaying Khmer art and sculptures. Hundreds of pieces are housed here including both pre-and post-Angkorian pieces.

Afternoon, visit the Russian Market (Psah Tuol Thom Pong), a lively outdoor market where you will find antiquities, silver and gold jewelry, gems, silk, kramas, stone and wood carvings, as well as T-Shirts, CDs and other souvenirs. End your visit of the charming capiltal with a visit of the Wat Phnom Temple, Phnom Penh’s namesake. Then transfer back to hotel. O/n at the same hotel.
